The Bellevue Steelers celebrated their 40th season homecoming this past weekend with a Friday/Saturday doubleheader of fun.
Friday night started with the parents and coaches pick-up game. The weather was perfect and played under the lights of Bellevue Field. In the end, team yellow led by coaches Abernathy, Bonner, and Dobbins were too much for the red team, leaving with 42-7 victory and the 2016 bragging rights.
Coach Dobbins, a huge Florida Gators fan was seeking redemption from his Gators loss to the Vols earlier this season. Dobbins explained, “I’m still mad about that game. I came out tonight ready to let out all my frustration on team red. We got the victory, and now I’m ready to move on.”
As that game was winding down, so was the annual chili cook-off. This year’s competition featured seven contestants and a variety of delicious chili.
Walking away with this year’s title of chili queen was 11 year-old Steeler’s cheerleader Ila Howard for her secret recipe turkey chili. Howard received a $50 gift card courtesy of Steelers sponsor Corner Pub of Bellevue.
The team banner contest winner was the single B team, created by Lisa Young, Corinne Bond, and Ginger Hayes.
The highlight of the evening was the crowning of 2016 homecoming king and queens. This is highly coveted honor that’s awarded based on the following criteria: Being a kind, positive, enthusiastic role model and a good teammate. Being helpful and respectful to all coaches and teammates.
This year’s queens are Teri Randazzo, Ellie Swaffer, Camryne Trentham, and Aly Meale. The kings are Kyren Frank, Kordale Keel, David Collins, and Icsom Church. Congratulations to all of this year’s deserving winners.
Saturday was wonderful and was kicked off by Sheriff Daron Hall and the Davidson County Sheriffs Honor Guard. Recording artist Karianne Jean beautifully sang the national anthem to get the games underway.
The game of the day was the Steelers AA trying to continue their winning streak against the Hendersonville Titans.
