"The home of hometown heroes"

The boys and girls varsity basketball teams from Christ Presbyterian Academy both advanced in Region 6-AA action this week.

The girls beat Stewart County in a defensive struggle Friday night 39-23, then defeated Page on Monday 55-48 to advance to the Region finals tonight.

The boys team bounced back from their loss to Giles County in district play by beating Stewart County 64-44 Saturday.

The Lady Lions were led by all-time scoring and rebounding leader Savannah LeGate.  The senior standout pured in a game-high 27 points against Page.

CPA used a steady game on both ends of the court, outscoring page in each quarter.

They saved their best play for the final period when Page tried to mount a comeback.

But LeGate and the Lady Lions would have no part of it, outscoring Page 19-16 in the final quarter to hold on for the victory.

Carrington Washburn scored 13 points for CPA, and Addie Russell Omer added seven more.  Senior Anne-Florence Brown netted four points for the Lady Lions, while Libby Long added three points.

The boys jumped on Stewart County early, and kept the foot on the accelerator.

The Lions outscored Stewart 20-7 in the first quarter and hung on for a 26-14 lead at the half.

The Lions came out strong again in the third quarter, putting the game away by outscoring Stewart 24-14 in the quarter to take a commanding 50-28 lead.

The Lions would exchange baskets with Stewart in the fourth and hold on for a 21-point victory.

Michael Mayernick led the Lions’ attack with 21 points, while fellow senior Clay Washburn would score 17 points.

Bryce McCormick netted eight points for CPA, while James Deaton and McNeil Stout each scored seven points for the Lions.

The girls take on Giles County in the finals tonight, while the boys will have to beat Marshall County to advance.
