Ensworth opened the 2016 playoffs, traveling to Eads, Tennessee to take on the Briarcrest Christian Saints.

The Tigers came into the game hot, winning six of their last seven games.

Briarcrest got on the board first with a 79-yard Tyler Badie touchdown run.

Ensworth answered with a vengeance, scoring four touchdowns in the second quarter.

Tim Covington had two touchdown runs and Jaylon King ran for one and threw another to Rodney Owens, giving the Tigers a 28-14 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, both defenses tightened up and there was no scoring until the final minute of the quarter when running back Nicky Clifton punched it in from two yards out, giving the Tigers a 35-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Briarcrest tried to get back into the game with a 7-yard Jackson Walker touchdown run, cutting the lead to 35-21.

That’s about as close as it would get as Ensworth flexed their muscle in the final six minutes of the game. Jaylon King ran for his second touchdown and Jaylan Theus had a 77-yard defensive score, giving Ensworth a 49-21 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Briarcrest battled to the end and scored late, but it wouldn’t be enough as Ensworth won 49-27 to advance to the semifinals of the TSSAA Division II Class AA playoffs.

Up next for the Tigers will be a rematch with Montgomery Bell Academy this Saturday at 7:00.

The Big Red advanced after their 35-14 win over Christian Brothers. This week’s semifinal game will be a rematch of the game played just a few weeks ago in which Ensworth beat MBA 21-20 in a spectacular come-from-behind win.

This game should be as exciting as the first, but with much more on the line as the winner will advance to the championship to face the winner of the Brentwood-Baylor game.
