Hillwood Hoopsters Have Best Week Of Year

The Hillwood High School boys varsity basketball team had it’s best week of the season this week, beating two rivals in impressive fashion.

The Hilltoppers started the week by beating McGavock 54-35 and ended it on Friday with an impressive 56-45 win over Hunters Lane.

HHS were led by Brandon Allen, who scored 19 points against McGavock, and came back with 20 more points against Hunters Lane.

Hillwood outscored McGavock in each quarter, playing consistent basketball throughout the game.

The Hilltoppers jumped out to a 11-5 lead behind some excellent defense that led to easy baskets.

Both teams played well in the second, but Hillwood was still able to stretch the lead to 25-18 entering the locker room at halftime.

The Hilltoppers were able to put the game away in the third, once again employing a stifling defense to go with their best offensive quarter.  The Hilltoppers outscored their opponent 15-6 in the quarter to take a commanding 40-24 lead into the final period.

McGavock played better in the fourth, but Hillwood still managed to outscore them by three to guarantee the win.

Besides Allen, Cydney Williams and Ladon Howard also played an excellent game for Hillwood.  Williams scored 17 points and Howard added 13 points.

Antonio Smith and Austen Thomas each added two points for the Hilltoppers.

Hillwood fell behind Hunters Lane early, trailing 14-11 after the first quarter.  But the Hilltoppers once again turned the pressure up on defense to get back into the game in the second and then seize the lead for good in the third.

Hillwood outscored Hunters Lane 13-8 in the second to take a 24-22 lead at the half.  Once again they played their best basketball on both ends of the court in the third, outscoring Hunters Lane 18-5 to take a commanding 42-27 lead  into the fourth.

Hunters Lane battle back in the final period, scoring a game-high 18 points, but the lead was too large to overcome and Hillwood held on for the win.

Brandon Allen again led the Hilltoppers in scoring with 20 points.  Cydney Williams also played another good game, scoring 12 points.

Jake Moon played a fine game, scoring six points, while Austen Thomas also added six points and Ladon Howard netted five points.
