Harpeth Youth Soccer Association is hosting a parent talk titled, “Developing Winners for Life Through Sport” by Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) national trainer, Stewart Brown, this Saturday, August 6th at 2 p.m. at Cross Point Community Church in Bellevue.

The talk is free to the public.  We will be selling PCA’s accompanying workshop book for $10 which is filled with tips and advice for parents.

In this parent talk, sports parents learn why and how to focus on the “second goal,” what a child is learning from youth sports.  It guides parents in:

-Assessing their children’s goals and desires in youth sports in comparison with their own;

-How to talk with your child about practices, games and what they are learning through sports;

-How to enact and reinforce PCA’s major principles: Mastery of Sport (Not Just Scoreboard Results), which values effort, learning and bouncing back from mistakes and adversity; Filling Emotional Tanks, with the correct mix of truthful, specific praise and constructive criticism; and Honoring the Game through appropriate sideline behavior and interaction with coaches.

Last year, HYSA partnered with PCA, a nationally-acclaimed program and nonprofit working to create a positive, character-building sports experience for all youth athletes.

Endorsed by professional athletes and national sports organizations, PCA seeks to temper the “win-at-all-costs” mentality that has infiltrated youth sports.

PCA instills in players a mindset for on and off-field success, teaches parents to focus on improvement rather than scores, and provides coaches with tools to maximize their effectiveness.  The end result is happier sports families, coaches, and kids.
