Local Basketball Team Wraps Up Fine Season
By David Bonner
Bellevue’s own “Nature Boys” just completed their first season of winter basketball with another impressive win.
Led by coaches Luke Wilson and Joe Johnson, the team finished with an 8-1 record.
The team is a close group of friends and family, and many of the players play football together in the fall for the Bellevue Steelers and coach Wilson.
Their toughness was evident throughout the season as the Nature Boys dominated on the boards. In addition to rebounding, the team took pride in their pressure defense, ball movement, and clutch shooting.
Coach Wilson, an avid Kentucky Wildcats fan, uses the same coaching principals as his idol, John Calipari.
“Just like the godfather coach C, we use our depth and athleticism to wear down the opponent. Having 12 solid kids allows us to rotate fresh players and run the entire game,” Wilson explains,
The team also relies on a great support group of parents and fans. “Just like the Big Blue Nation, our fans bring great passion and support to every game”, added Wilson.
Standing at 6’3” and 280 lbs., coach Wilson would appear to be an intimidating coach, however, he remains calm and supportive on the sidelines.
“There’s no need to panic in the game of basketball. If I lead in a calm manner in adverse situations, the players tend to do the same,” said Wilson.
The team has enjoyed a fun year of competing and looks forward to staying together to compete in sports year-round.
The team’s final season statistical leaders are: offensive rebounds-Martez Lamb, defensive rebounds-Kaleb Johnson, steals-Ashton Flowers, assists-Garrett Palmer, blocks-Martez Lamb, scoring-Kordale Keel.
