Local Flag Football Team Plays at Pro Bowl
The Tennessee Titans Boys 13-14 team competed in the NFL Flag Football National Championship this past weekend at the Pro Bowl in Orlando, Florida.
Ten boys and four coaches made the journey to Disney’s Wide World of Sports to compete with the nations best. The group came together just a few months ago through an open tryout held in Hendersonville, Tn.
The boys bonded quickly in the two months leading up to their trip to Orlando.
Representing five different schools in Middle Tennessee, the team practiced several times a week in preparation for the tournament. For several of the players it was their first time on an airplane or out of Tennessee altogether.
When the plane landed in Orlando, receiver Brent Rowe of Hendersonville High School was relieved. “When we landed I thought we were going to go off the runway because we were moving so fast” said Rowe.
The team was set up nicely in Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort and attended Animal Kingdom.
The team was matched up on the first day of the tournament with the Ryan Dolphins out of Miami. It was a tough first game matchup considering Ryan was in last year’s Championship game. The Titans team hung tough in the first half but couldn’t contain the Ryan speed in the second half, falling 20-0.
In their second game versus the Chiefs, the Titans regrouped and made some defensive adjustments. Tysean Jefferson was installed as a pass rusher and wreaked havoc on the Chiefs quarterback as the Titans rolled 27-0. Chase Honeycutt had two huge interceptions for the Titans that led to touchdowns. Quarterback Ryan Oden from Station Camp tossed four TDs.
In what was called the “game of the day” by many at the tournament, the Titans and Jets played a five-overtime defensive battle. Jack Busey scored late to tie the game at 12 but the Titans eventually fell in overtime 5. The Jets made a huge defensive stop from the one-yard line to hang on for the 18-12 victory. Sunday the team headed to Camping World Stadium to attend the Pro Bowl. The flag championship game was played prior to the Pro Bowl and featured the Texans vs. the Cardinals. The Texans led most of the game but the Cardinals got the ball with just over two minutes to play and scored on the final play of the game to win the tournament.
The Pro Bowl didn’t disappoint either as the AFC scored in the final minutes to win the game 24-23 to the delight of the Titans flag players. Delanie Walker of the Titans was named the offensive MVP of the game for his two touchdown game and game-winning score. It was a wonderful experience for all the players, coaches, and parents. The team was able to meet many NFL Stars and even took part in “media day” with some of them. Bellevue resident and Hillwood High football player AJ Bonner recalls his fondest memories of the trip.
“It was awesome to meet the NFL payers and take part in media day. They treated us like celebrities. I had a great time with my teammates playing ball, going to Disney, hanging out at the hotel, and going to the Pro Bowl. Missing a few days of school wasn’t too bad either.”
The team is proud of what they were able to accomplish in just a few months and will cherish the experience forever. The team would also like to thank many great sponsors came together to help fund the teams experience. Hendersonville Civitan, Porta Via Restaurant, Boost Fit Club, Pear Tree Avenue, Delta Dental, Bellevue Steelers, Crescent Communities, Lincoln Home Loans, Farm Bureau Insurance Spencer Garrett, and Reliant Realty agent Sean Shariati.
