Ensworth Boys & Girls Teams Move On

The boys and girls varsity basketball teams from Ensworth showed little mercy in pounding St. Benedict of Auburndale to move on in the Division II AA playoffs.

The Tigers beat St. Benedict 70-38 while the Lady Tigers won 58-21.

Ensworth pounced on the Eagles early, taking a 12-7 lead after the first quarter, and stretching it to 34-15 at the half.

St Benedict played much better in the third quarter, actually outscoring the Tigers 18-14 to cut the lead to 48-29 entering the fourth quarter.

But Ensworth wasn’t about to let this one slip away and poured in 22 points in the final period while holding St Benedict to just five points to secure the win.

James Wiseman once again led the Tigers in scoring with 22 points, followed by Jaylon King, who poured in 13 points for Ensworth.

Warren Zager was also in double figures for the Tigers, scoring 10 points, while Gabriel McDaniel added nine points and Keyshawn Lawrence netted six points.

Ensworth girls face Father Ryan on Thursday at 10 a.m. They have split 1-1 in their head to head match ups this season. This is the first semifinal appearance for Father Ryan since 2004 and the first for Ensworth since 2013.

The Ensworth boys face Brentwood Academy on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. The Tigers fell to the Eagles in both region games, first at home 57-67 and more recently 63-70 in OT. The Tigers are primed for a post season push and may cause trouble for the Eagles after a strong performance in the quarterfinals versus St. Benedict.

In other sports news at Ensworth, the boys’ Lacrosse team rallied in the second half after a 5-2 half time deficit to beat St. George 8-6 in the first regular season game for the Tigers.

Sam Walker led the charge with three goals and an assist. Eion Carr, Worth Scott, and Jackson Wright also chipped in three points each for the game. Goalie, James Seabury had a great game with 10 saves including three crucial saves in the 4th quarter.
