Tryouts Set for Nashville FC Teams
By Alicia Steinhilber
As the spring soccer season wraps up in the next month, Nashville FC Youth is already gearing up for the 2017-18 season. Evaluation dates and tryout dates for its Academy and Select soccer programs, respectively, for the coming year.
Unlike recreational soccer, the process for select soccer begins in late spring. For those players born in years 2009 and older, Nashville FC Youth offers select soccer (with professional coaches), a ten-month program that runs from late summer through spring (minimal winter training in younger age groups). The focus is on player development, which includes skill acquisition, understanding the game and applying tactics, mental preparation and self mastery. In addition to a club curriculum for team and player development, Nashville FC Youth employs Positive Coaching Alliance’s sports psychology and character development program. Travel for the younger age groups is in the middle Tennessee area.
At the younger ages, the club holds evaluations to see if a child is developmentally ready for a more controlled and focused environment of learning soccer. In its Academy program (for birth years 2006-2009), Nashville FC Youth holds evaluations instead of traditional tryouts where there are “cuts.” Each player who commits to play for the Academy program will be assessed and placed into an appropriate player pool by the Academy staff based on the player’s age and ability level.
Academy evaluations are free and will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. on various dates between May 15 and May 31 according to age group. All evaluations will be held at the HYSA complex at 7820 Coley Davis Road in Bellevue.
Nashville FC Youth’s Select soccer program, for those born in years 1999 to 2005, will conduct traditional tryouts and place players on defined teams based on age and ability level.
Tryout dates for boys and girls born in 2005 will also be held between May 16 and May 31. For birth years 1999 to 2004, tryouts will be held June 5 through June 14 after the TSSA’s State Cup.
