Two Steeler Teams Advance in Playoffs

The Bellevue Steelers continue to press on as the 2016 TNYFL playoffs reach the semifinals. The B team pulled out a stunning 20-19 overtime win over the Brentwood Blaze this past Saturday at Joelton Middle School. The game started great for Bellevue as they marched down the field and took an early 6-0 lead on a Trey Pearson touchdown run. It looked as though the Steelers would pull out to a big lead but two touchdowns were taken off the board due to some very questionable penalties. Brentwood fought back to take a 7-6 lead and extended their lead on an interception return late in the 4th quarter. It seemed like the officials were practicing for a flag throwing contest because every Steelers big play was negated by a costly penalty. Late in the 4th quarter the Steelers kept it simple, putting  the ball in the hands of quarterback Trey Pearson. The season looked to be coming to an end when the Steelers faced a 4th down and goal from the 23 yard line. The plan was simple, make a play. Pearson took the snap and knowing he had to score, weaved his way from sideline to sideline, dodging tackles and staying on his feet just long enough to tire out the Blaze defense, eventually crossing the goal line and pulling the Steelers to within one. The fans urged coach Richardson to go for two and the win but the savvy coach knew what he was doing as he gave the fans the “I’m the coach” look and held up one finger. The Steelers lined up for the extra point and after two more penalties needed to convert from the 20 yard line. Pearson in what could only be described as “déjà vu” duplicated his exciting touchdown run with a dazzling extra point conversion aided by a huge block from Tanner Hupp. This sent the Steeler crowd into a frenzy and gave the team all the momentum heading into overtime. The Steelers punched it in on the first play of overtime and converted the extra point to take a seven point lead. Brentwood answered with a touchdown pass to pull within one. The Blaze decided to go for two and the win but the Steelers got great penetration from their defensive line and stopped the Blaze just short of the goal line. First year head coach Sleepy Richardson was exhausted and excited about his teams second straight win as they continue to build momentum in the playoffs.   “I am so proud of this team and how far they’ve come.” The Steelers B will be traveling to Murfreesboro this Saturday to play the Blackman Blaze. The winner will advance to the championship. The Steelers AA team, riding a three game winning streak, also looks to advance to the championship game as they take on the Riverdale Warriors at Bellevue Middle School.
